SFMOMA Tumblr — Mozilla Webmaker Homepage Remix

Year
2013

In September 2013, Max Capacity — newly appointed as a Mozilla Webmaker Fellow — used Mozilla's web remixing tools to rewrite and "vandalize" SFMOMA's front page, inserting their own work onto the museum's homepage. SFMOMA's official Tumblr blog reblogged the remix approvingly. A notable gesture at the intersection of institutional critique, net art, and the open web.

SFMOMA Tumblr — Mozilla Webmaker Homepage Remix

Summary

Max Capacity used Mozilla Webmaker’s remix tools — part of their newly awarded Mozilla Webmaker Fellowship — to rewrite SFMOMA’s front page, inserting their own work into the museum’s official homepage. SFMOMA’s Tumblr then reblogged the result under the title “maxcapacity: CHECK IT OUT I GOT INTO THE…”, effectively acknowledging the intervention.

The action was characteristic of Max’s practice at the intersection of glitch culture, institutional critique, and the early open web ethos: using freely available tools to insert oneself into spaces of cultural authority.

Note: The Mozilla Webmaker Fellowship (Oct 2013) provided the tools and context for this action. See also the Mozilla Webmaker Tumblr announcement: mozillawebmaker.tumblr.com/post/64042593681.
